What is Engineering? at JHU Johns Hopkins University 's Whiting School of Engineering has dedicated itself to creating a national pipeline of future engineers with the introduction of the summer course, What is Engineering?. This course is being offered to high school students at sites around the country, including 4 locations in Maryland Baltimore , Elkridge, Rockville and Bel Air. In this class students develop a new level of problem solving skills which they achieve through hands on experimentation and lecture. Students who complete the course with an A or B will receive 3 transferable credits from Johns Hopkins University . The deadline has been extended to May 15, 2008 . 2008 Ag Discovery Program The University of Maryland is well underway in its planning and preparation for the 2008 Ag Discovery summer program, which will run from Sunday, July 13, through Friday, July 25. The UM program is one of six offered nation-wide. Those interested in learning more about the program and finding out how to apply should visit the USDA/APHIS web site ( http://www.aphis.usda.gov/agdiscovery/ ). Ag Discovery is open to high school students 14-17 years of age and gives these teens a glimpse of some of the many career paths open to them in agricultural and environmental sciences.

Young Scholars Program University of Maryland is hosting a young scholars program July 13 August 1, 2008. The Young Scholars Program features 14 courses that are designed as an introduction to a particular field of study. Students earn 3 college credits in just 3 weeks, selecting a course in one of the following subjects: architecture, biology, creative writing, engineering, drawing, materials science and engineering, sociology, business and entrepreneurship or music technology, journalism, landscape architecture, kinesiology, biotechnology, or trial advocacy. UMD Young Scholars Program In the Young Scholars Program, you’ll enroll in a 3-credit introductory course, which takes you from theory to practice through field trips or guest speakers. University of Maryland University of Maryland is providing a summer program for students age 14-17. This year will be the third year they’ve hosted a 2 week residence camp to introduce students to a large array of career options in Ag and Environmental Science and the underlying majors/disciplines that prepare students for those tracks. Focus is on the government service with USDA-APHIS since they fund the program. Participants are responsible only for personal costs. The program is competitive. Forensic Science Camp Invitation Are you looking for something out of the ordinary to do this summer? DNR Outdoor Discovery Camps The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites parents looking for something fun for kids to do during the summer months to explore the opportunities offered by the Maryland Park Service’s Outdoor Discover Program. Outdoor Discovery is a residential camp that provides youth with a total outdoor living experience, acquainting them with Maryland’s state parks while fostering a feeling of responsibility and respect for our natural environment. Junior Zoo Crew The junior Zoo Crew is a unique and exciting program that allows students to become part of the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. Participants engage in a wide variety of experiences that provide them with opportunities to serve their Zoo community, develop career skills, and broaden their understanding of Wild Life and Wild Places. The program is runs for four weeks with volunteers attending three full days per week. Applications are due by May 15. Early admission deadline is April 7 th. Free Summer Opportunity Carnegie Mellon University is offering a free summer program for minority and female students. The only requirement is that the students must be a rising junior or senior and considering a STEM career. Med Vet Summer Academy St. George’s University is hosting a 10-day premedical and preveterinary course that combines didactic lectures,small-group problem solving sessions, practical lab work, and hands-on-training through simulated and real-life situations. The student’s experience is further enhanced through several adventurous and educational off-campus excursions including snorkeling, dolphin watching, hiking and island touring. Students will receive college credit through the School of Arts and Sciences from participation in lectures and clinical practicals. The college session(age 18 or older) is Thursday, June 5 through Saturday, June 15, 2005. The high school session (age 15 to 17) is Thursday, June 26 through Saturday, July 5, 2008. The cost for the program is $1800. This includes housing, meals, medical instruction, activities and all transportation while in Grenada. 2008 National Space Club Scholars Progran NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is hosting a 6-week internship program at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. The program provides students with a “first-hand” work experience in a research and development environment in direct support of NASA’s mission to inspire the next generation of explorers. It is open to students who will be 16 years old and have completed the 10 th grade by June 2008, have demonstrated high academic success, and have an interest in space science or engineering as a career. Research Mentorship Program at UCSB The Research Mentorship Program (RMP) at UCSB Summer Sessions was established in 1995 and has since serviced highly motivated high school students who are ready to engage in true, cutting edge research. RMP students study recently published papers and participate in genuine investigations alongside UCSB faculty members and advanced graduate students. During six, intense weeks, students learn how to perform research in laboratories, library and/or field sites, use research techniques, collect and analyze data, write a research paper, and present their findings in a formal research symposium. Federal Water Quality Association scholarship Three to four scholarships in the amounts of $1500 - $2000 are awarded each year by FWQA to encourage young people to prepare for careers in environmental protection by supporting studies leading to a bachelor’s degree in applicable sciences or engineering. Graduating seniors planning to pursue environmental careers and who have been accepted to a 4-year bachelor’s program in an acceptable field of study by an institution of higher learning are eligible to apply. National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine We are now nominating students for the 2007 National youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. It is an intensive, 10-day program that is offered in Atlanta , Boston , Chicago , Houston-Galveston, Los Angeles , Philadelphia , Phoenix , San Francisco , and Washington D.C. To participate, you must have at least a GPA of 3.3, be a member of the classes of 2008 or 2009, and have a strong interest in the medical field.
