Second Grade

The Second Edition
November 2007

We are now finished the first quarter of second grade!  We are looking forward to discussing your children’s progress with you during conference week.  Please note that conferences are with the reading teachers at this time.  If you have a concern about an academic area other than language arts, please contact the teacher of that subject to arrange a discussion time or phone conference for a mutually convenient time.
During the month of November, children will be working on writing expanded “double scoop” sentences in language arts.  Students will be learning how to add details to complete sentences to make them more interesting.  For example, a simple sentence such as:  I wore a sweater would become I wore the fuzzy sweater that Grandma made for me.  Thank you for encouraging your second grader to make “double scoop” sentences when they write their spelling sentences at home for Tuesday night homework.
In math, students will be working on graphing skills this month.  Please encourage your child to discuss information that they can learn from reading different graphs.  Also, please help your students to study their math facts on a regular basis.
We will begin our study of maps and globes in social studies.  This unit will be followed by a science unit on interactions.  Students will use common household items to discover what makes an interaction.
In health, we will begin discussing safety, first aid and injury prevention.  Child abuse prevention is a component of this unit of instruction.  Please see attached objectives, vocabulary and resources.
During the week of November 12th, Bushy Park will celebrate American Education Week.  Our designated visit day is Tuesday, November 13th.
We are excited about beginning a new month of learning in second grade!  Please note the following dates for your calendar.
